Frequently Asked Questions

How do I open a log file?

Select File → Open or press ⌘O, then navigate to your log file and click Open. Logfile Expert will automatically detect the format. For detailed instructions, see our Getting Started Guide.

Can I monitor remote log files?

Yes! Logfile Expert supports SFTP connections to remote servers. Select File → Open Remote File and enter your server credentials. Live monitoring works for remote files too. Learn more in our Remote Files Documentation.

What log formats are supported?

Logfile Expert supports Apache (2.2 & 2.4), nginx, Linux syslog, auth log, kernel log, dmesg, JSON Lines, Postfix, fail2ban, PHP error logs, and vsftpd logs. You can also create custom formats. See the complete list in our Log Formats Guide.

How do I filter log entries?

Click the Filter button in the toolbar or press ⌘F. You can filter by content, date/time ranges, IP addresses, and log levels. Multiple filters can be combined. Learn more about filtering techniques.

Can I open multiple log files at once?

Yes! Each file opens in its own window. Select File → New Window or press ⌘N to open additional windows. Each window operates independently with its own filters and settings.

What are the system requirements?

Logfile Expert requires macOS 12.0 (Monterey) or later. It runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel processors.

How do I enable live monitoring?

Select View → Enable Live Monitoring or press ⌘L. The log view will automatically refresh as new entries are written to the file. You can adjust the refresh interval in Preferences.

The application is running slowly with large files. What should I do?

For large files, try these optimizations: 1) Set a maximum entry limit in Preferences, 2) Use time range filters to focus on specific periods, 3) Disable live monitoring when not needed, 4) Increase the refresh interval for remote files. See our Performance Optimization Guide.

How do I report a bug?

Email support@logfile-expert.com with details about the issue, including your OS version, Logfile Expert version, steps to reproduce, and any error messages. Screenshots are very helpful!
